the anthropological world through the image

The Ethnographic Film Festival of Athens is an annual event where ethnographic films directed by anthropologists, by professional filmmakers or by students, are seen together in a combined programme, trying to explore the anthropological world through the image.

In 2008 our team collaborated with Platforma Video Festival and we organized for the first time a tribute to students’ ethnographic films. Our goal was to introduce this particular genre to the audience and to open the dialogue for the presence and the possibilities of – what we call in academic terms – Visual Anthropology in Greece.

Since 2010 the Ethnographic Film Festival of Athens continues this exploration but from a wider perspective.  It has changed its form and its content and it continues as an autonomous festival examining the present and the the roots of today’s directions of the Ethnographic Film and Visual Anthropology.
